Family Holidays on the Coast
Take the kids
South Australia is an easy choice for a family holiday by the seaside. We’ve got hundreds of kilometres of coastline and just as many beautiful beaches. Fish and chips, sand castles, ice cream, waves to splash around in, what child can resist that?
Close to Adelaide, visit Glenelg, Henley Beach or Semaphore. Glenelg will delight. It’s our most popular metropolitan beach. Catch the tram from the city centre, stroll along the 200 metre jetty and wide foreshore. Relax on the deep white sands.
The Beach House
Glenelg’s biggest amusement centre. It’s a huge, fun-filled arena with waterslides, dodgem cars, a 120 year-old carousel (Australia’s oldest) and arcade games.
The Linear Trail runs all the way from the Adelaide Hills along the River Torrens to Henley Beach. It’s a great spot to start or finish a bike ride. Grab a coffee in Henley Square, play in the gentle waves, relax on the grass or eat at one of the many family-friendly cafes and restaurants.
City beaches
Virtually next door to Glenelg, Brighton beach is popular with families. Brighton’s Jetty Road, with its art-deco buildings and intriguing public art, is full of pubs, restaurants and cafés, many selling excellent fish and chips. Walk along the cliffs and trails and take in the spectacular views back towards Adelaide.
Two kilometres of grassy sand dunes gives Semaphore a very different feel to the other suburban beaches. Beautifully preserved seafront history and the grand boulevard of Semaphore Road, creates a vibrant mix of cosmopolitan and old world.
Surf beaches
The awesome beaches along the Fleurieu Peninsula will keep your adrenalin loving teenage children more than satisfied. For surfing, body-boarding or “big-wave action”, this is the place for you! Learn to surf at Middleton or head to Boomer Beach for some serious fun! Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot is a family favourite and one of the region’s prettiest beaches.
